The Great Reset
"Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its
top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be
dispersed over the face of the whole earth” (Genesis 11:4, ESV).
About 10 years ago, the globalist elites who comprise the World Economic Forum met in Davos, Switzerland and came up with several global policy objectives that were packaged into a concept they labeled “The Great Reset of Capitalism,” or simply “The Great Reset.” Briefly, this concept would mandate that world businesses – especially multi-national businesses – abandon their normal profit-seeking goals and focus instead on “saving the planet” and promoting racial and gender “equity.” Indeed, the WEF’s Great Reset is one of the working foundations for the socialist dream of an ecologically driven one-world government – a green Tower of Babel, if you will.
But you didn’t start hearing much about the Great Reset until 2021, when Joe Biden became president. And why was that? Because the big obstacle to it was removed – namely, Donald Trump was no longer the president. So when the G-7 conference was next convened, the members had a new and pliable best friend in Biden, whom Macron, Merkel, and the other G-7 members at the time could manipulate every- and any-which-way, much to their delight. With Trump back in the White House, talk about the Great Reset has subsided again.
But Biden went merrily along with other G-7 members in backing, for example, a global minimum tax of 15% on multinational corporations. What would be the purpose of a global minimum tax? It would eliminate tax competition, so that a multinational is not incentivized to move its headquarters to a country with lower corporate tax rate. It would be a no-lose proposition for all governments except those few who would otherwise have lower rates. And, of course, corporations don’t really pay taxes – they just pass the tax along to consumers and/or employees by raising prices and/or cutting wages. In general, when business-related competition is eliminated, the big losers are virtually always consumers.
At the time, 130 out of 139 countries had signed on to the global minimum corporate tax. The nine exceptions were Estonia, Hungary, Ireland, Kenya, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Saint Vincent, Peru, and the Grenadines (islands in the Caribbean). These exceptions don’t sound like much in the way of influence, except that if even one of the three EU members listed refused to sign on, the entire 27-member EU bloc, according to their rules requiring unanimity, would be unable to take part.
All of this seemed to reinforce the conclusion in 2021 of lawyer and political commentator William A. Bonner regarding the treatment of Donald Trump:
"The extraordinary hatred of President Trump expressed in the media has actually been in response to his America First policy, which stood firmly against the political agenda for global governance through economic controls." (The St. Croix Review, June/July 2021)
That probably explained the hostility that began when Trump first declared his candidacy in 2015, a hostility that quickly intensified when he won the primaries and hasn’t let up to this day in his second term. In other words, the left’s “problem” with him wasn’t really his past relationships with women, his “mean tweets,” his many firings of aides and cabinet officers, the various (unsupported) allegations of collusion with foreign powers, or even the admittedly self-aggrandizing, bombastic way he typically announces what he considers an accomplishment. The left’s real problem was almost entirely his “Make America Great Again” policy objective, which he had declared from the outset.
And so, when Trump lost the 2020 election, the globalist drive to make the US part of the green Tower of Babel went into full force. However, there were and still are other obstacles that the globalists faced and still face in the US – namely, the still-formidable strength of both Christianity and grassroots conservatism. Indeed, any Republican takeover of Congress and/or the White House, for example, would threaten the duration of any agreements the G-7 and others could wheedle out of Democrats. It’s no wonder that both our enemies and our alleged friends would like to see one-party rule in America – especially by Democratic Socialists or progressive Democrats.
Truth be told, many countries right now are dominated by a single party or group, and misery always seeks company. According to a Freedom House report from 2021, less than 20% of the world’s population lives in a free country, the smallest proportion since 1995. For example, the Hindu ruling party in India routinely persecutes both Christians and Muslims, while many EU countries are governed by entrenched statist bureaucracies dominated by a single (left-leaning) political party or group.
Are we close to one-party domination or rule? Not yet, but many commentators believe the next decade will tell the story. The fact is, Democratic Socialism has been working its way through our national psyche since the 1930s and can be stopped only if we can soon achieve at least the following: (1) first and foremost, a great many more Americans must return to their Christian roots as individuals before we can even begin to advance Christian values as a nation; (2) we must loudly protest and decisively defeat all attempts to undermine honest elections – the recent failure to pass the SAVE Act notwithstanding; and (3) we need to nominate more candidates at all levels who not only are upright and can get our message across but, if elected, will fight unceasingly to make or message bear fruit.
As (1) above suggests, there’s a direct correlation between a weakening of Christian values and an increase in socialism and cultural rot. Few of us would disagree that most of the weakening started and now flourishes in our schools, and it promises to get worse. For this reason, we the people need to start turning out in noisy droves at school board and town meetings to push back stridently on attempts to indoctrinate children with cultural Marxist programs like critical race theory, sex education, gender fluidity, and whatever other dangerous nonsense the left devises.
As one anonymous critic noted: We know brainwashing works when white people are out protesting against white people for being white.
To recover from this moral freefall, the “great reset” that we really need is the one described, for example, in Colossians 3:9-10 (ESV): “Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” Thus, as individuals, we need to “put on the new self.” For starters, that means a large number of Americans who call themselves Christians but basically ignore Jesus and His teachings need to be born again. Only then can we start to turn the tide.
Presently, though, American globalists/Marxists feel they are getting closer to winning. And why wouldn’t they? Their opposition (that’s us!) has been unrighteous, apathetic, and overly compromising. We have been softened up with stimulus checks, covid relief payments, endless unemployment benefits, plenty of Orwellian newspeak shaping “reality” on every important issue, supportive propaganda from most of the media, and perhaps too much silence from the churches. And on a policy level, as American economist and philosopher Thomas Sowell has observed, Western social history shows a tendency to replace what works with what sounds good. Overall, too many Americans have put their trust in government instead of in Jesus.
Of course, all of this may be part of God’s plan. In Genesis, He let the one-world tower builders attain what was probably a considerable height for its time before He scrambled their languages and ended their project. That was the beginning of “the nations.” How will He thwart the globalists this time? Or will He just let them win and let people rain increasing misery and destruction on each other to create the conditions for Jesus’s return? Since we don’t know these answers, we need to stay vigilant and keep our focus on Jesus – but at the same time, actively resist the evil all around us.
