Christmas Gems Buried in Old and Unpopular Hymns

First of all, Merry Christmas! Earlier in the day I began looking through an online hymnal for some Christmas hymns to use for devotion. What I found were hundreds of songs written to express the human affection of the Incarnation of the Eternal Son. I want to pass along the blessings to you (those that are not connected with me yet on Facebook). Read how humans have reworded the Incarnation and its impact on them and the world. One of my favorite lines is “Though not arrayed in splendor, He still makes death surrender.” Another is “Pilot Me.” (both are listed below)

The following are only small sections of the hymns. The songs in full may be accessed by searching online or the title which is listed after the dash (sorry, too pressed for time today to provide links for you).

Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood. -Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

He whom the world could not inclose doth in Mary’s lap repose; He is become an infant small, who by His might upholdeth all. Kyrie Eleis! -All Praise To Jesus’ Hallowed Name

Hail the blest morn! when the great Mediator down from the mansions of glory descends; Shepherds, go worship the babe in the manger, Lo! for his guard the bright angels attend. -Hail The Blest Morn!

Happy He, whom Christ shall find, watching to see Him come. Him the Judge of all Mankind shall bear triumphant home: Who can answer to His Word? Which of you dares meet His Day! “Rise, and come to Judgment” – Lord, we rise, and come away! -Hearken to the Solemn Voice

He wears no kingly crown, yet as a king He’s known; Though not arrayed in splendor, He still makes death surrender. -O Bride of Christ, Rejoice

Fill with the radiance of Thy grace, the souls now lost in error’s maze. And all whom in their secret minds some dark delusion haunts and blinds. -O Christ, Our True and Only Light

As a mother stills her child, Thou canst hush the ocean wild; Boist’rous waves obey Thy will, When Thou say’st to them “Be still.” Wondrous Sov’reign of the sea, Jesus, Savior, pilot me. -Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me

When came in flesh the incarnate Word, the heedless world slept on. And only simple shepherds heard that God had sent His Son. When comes the Savior at the last, from east to west shall shine; The awful pomp, and earth aghast Shall tremble at the sign. -When Came In Flesh The Incarnate Word

Led by the star, the wise men find the Light that lightens all mankind; The threefold presents which they bring declare him God, and Man, and King. -Why, Herod, Unrelenting Foe?

Feel free to list some of your favorites in the comments section. May God be glorified as we celebrate the day on which our Redeemer entered the world by taking on flesh, being born of a virgin! PRAISE THE GOD OF OUR SALVATION!

Wow! This is very educational to learn more about old Hymns especially the unpopular that I never had heard of. Thank you for sharing this with us. I saw this on the facebook because I am a fan of John Calvin! Again thank you for sharing this with us. I will have do dig through more old Christ-center hymns. I do love old hymns that is Christ-center.
