This is a short article by Becky Grove, a young lady that worships the risen Christ with us each Sunday at FCC in Irvine. Becky writes about the dual-lives that Christians tend to live, comparing them to some well-known superheroes. The entire article can be found in the “BT Exclusives” section of biblicalthought.com in PDF. Here is a snippet from Becky.

Batman is one of the most famous and loved superheroes, and he doesn’t even have any super powers. You can understand the appeal, as he is someone you can relate to. Anyone could be Batman, with enough moneyand the right tailor. Gotham city is reminiscent of New York or Los Angeles (which the majority of you are probably familiar with). He has the coolest nemeses, snazzy vehicles, and fights crime: who doesn’t love Batman (except those crazy Superman purists)? However, too many people try to BE Batman. No, you may not see a bunch of people running around in masks or the bat signal in the sky, but an alarmingly large number of Christians attempt to live two lives.

Many people call themselves a Christian and don’t act like it. Or maybe they do, but only when around other Christians. Chances are, you are or have been guilty of this at some point; I know I have. At church, you shine, you talk about the Bible, you say “Praise God” often, and no one ever doubts your salvation. Then you go to work, and you blend in with your coworkers so well that they would ever guess you walk with the Lord. Even if you say you’re Christian, they just assume you mean…click here to read the rest.

Sorry, but Superman IS the greatest superheroe. I never saw Batman turn back time or lift an entire continent from its foundations and throw it into space.

  2. Hey…I never said Batman is the best…just that only the Superman purists don’t like Batman. I don’t see they can’t both be liked. Ecumenicalism is okay within the superheroes realm, right?

Just like you can like both Harry Potter AND Lord of the Rings or chocolate AND vanilla or Star Wars AND Star Trek.

Great job Becky. A very timely and convicting commentary. I just have one question: Can I at least keep wearing the deep purple boots at least on Saturdays and every other Wednesday??

I never thought that I would ever say this about anything written regarding Batman, but very eloquently put. It caught me off guard a bit and made me reanalyze myself in the light of scripture.
And Darren, please continue wearing the boots. See me on Sunday, I will have my camera.

  5. “Moonlighting Christians,” “Apostate’s Christian Cape.”

Two terms that I have never heard before.

Chalk those up on the board with “Theologically Correct,” “Stratiotology,” “Foolosophy,” “Malakosis,” “Doxological Apologetics,” “humanistic vomit,” and so many more biblicalthought.com-isms!

Oh, and Stacie, no need to bring the camera. I have video tape of Darrin in full gear, boots and all, jumping off the big Faith Defenders sign in an attempt to fly. Maybe I’ll post it here as another BT Exclusive! (Darrin knows I love him)!

  6. Darrin: You can continue wearing the boots, but you make us uncomfortable when you wear the full gear, mentioned by Stephen, to college group. Maybe mixed in some street clothes once in a while?

Stacie: Thanks, and give Batman a chance. I hear they are making another one after The Dark Night.

Stephen: Cool, my words are “isms,” yay!

  7. I’d just like to say, I think it’s about time that batman got some attention on this blog :P

Great article Becky. I have a cane that I use to cut through the dirt. LOL As said in Gal 2 verse 20. A life verse for me. Romans 6 verse 6) 5 for context
For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, verse 6 Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; and 7 why not. for he who has died is freed from sin.
In Christ we can do it go Batman!!
